Heart thundering, Juliet clasped her hands under her chin. You see the tiniest sparrow. Please help my little dog to be all right. It had been long time. Would God still hear her prayers?

The vet faced them. “Good news. The copperhead inflicted what is known as a ‘dry bite’ on Moose.”

Shifting Sophie to the crook of his arm, Rob placed his other arm around Juliet. “That is good news.”

Juliet looked from him to the vet. “I don’t understand.”

“A dry bite doesn’t release venom.” Dr. Erickson smiled. “Copperheads are known for giving what is essentially a warning bite. Good thing Moose didn’t tangle with a diamondback.”

Juliet released a slow breath. “What does this mean for Moose?”

“When no envenomization occurs, we treat the bite as a puncture wound only. Most swelling resolves within forty-eight hours. I’ve given Moose an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory to be on the safe side. And also, an antihistamine for his comfort.”

Juliet put her hand to her throat. “Will Moose suffer any long-term complications?”

Dr. Erickson shook her cap of glossy blond hair. “We’d be having a different conversation if he had been injected with venom. The location of the bite on his paw versus his head is in his favor. And you got him medical attention right away. But owing to his small size...”

Juliet took a ragged breath. “The venom would have spread rapidly throughout his small body.”

“For the next twenty-four hours, I’d like Moose to remain here for observation.” Dr. Erickson touched Juliet’s sleeve. “I’m just being cautious. No real worries.”

Juliet nodded. “Whatever you think is best. Thank you for your help. Can I say goodbye?”

“He’s groggy. Give us a call in the morning, and I’ll let you know how he fared overnight.”

Juliet breathed a silent prayer of gratitude to God.

Rob stuck out his hand. “Thank you so much, Dr. Erickson, for taking good care of our little buddy.”

The tall, coolly beautiful veterinarian flashed him a brilliant smile. “Please call me Ingrid.”

With her nagging worry over Moose relieved, Juliet suddenly noticed how gorgeous the veterinarian truly was. And the inordinate amount of interest she appeared to show in Rob. Irritated, Juliet tapped her foot on the linoleum.

Ingrid Erickson held on to Rob’s hand a little longer than Juliet believed necessary. So unprofessional in her opinion.

Not that he appeared to mind the attention. He smiled at the vet. Juliet’s mouth flattened.

Could he not see the doctor was attracted to him? That charm of his was as natural as breathing. Same old story since kindergarten. Women falling at his feet. And he was clueless.

She propped her hands on her hips.

“I’ve been wanting to meet you. Such a hero.” Ingrid Erickson threw Rob’s bicep an admiring glance.

Juliet went rigid. His smile faded a tad.

“Moose was the hero today.” He extricated his hand from the veterinarian. “He saved my daughter from the snake.”

Erickson’s smile never faltered. “I’d love the chance for us to get to know each other better.”

“Uh... Umm...” Eyes wide, his gaze flicked to Juliet.

Taking pity on him, she looped her arm around his.
